Stuck at manjaro loading screen, no TTY, need help finding error and repairing

Hello,

I rebooted after noticing I could no longer use lutris because vulkan issues. I had just updated system so thought a reboot might be first order then got stuck at loading screen.
TTY will only stay on the screen if I hold crl + alt f1,f2 etc (can’t enter any commands)
Chrooted in on liveISO and did the following, and got the following errors.

Just a thought, is the following mount command sufficient for accessing all the necessary area’s?
mount -o subvol=@ /dev/… /mnt? I am on a btrfs partitioning. I noted in the mount command that I could see proc, sys, dev etc so I assume I don’t need to mount these manually? (still getting used to btrfs and arch)

Also, am I ok to use the cryptsetup luksOpen command only on the sda2 (root) partition? or do I need to be unlocking the sda3(boot) and mounting that aswell?

Not entirely sure how btrfs works in mounting, but you technically only need the boot and root partitions mounted from your file system. I believe arch-chroot script automatically mounts the proc, sys and dev for your, you need those when reinstalling something.

As for the problem with available TTY, but you cannot type stuff in, I think it might be a kernel thing. Try to install an older kernel maybe. Other than that, idk. Manjaro is one of the distros I really recommend people stay away from, because it tends to break way more often than arch (I know because I used it for a few years). Typically the distro you use doesn’t matter that much, but it matter who the maintainers are.

Hope you’ll find a solution if going with a lower version kernel doesn’t do.

Ah ok that makes sense as to why I saw sys, dev, proc etc in mounted.
That brings a question to mind, since my boot and root are encrypted by luks and I had to use cryptsetup luksOpen, it took me a while to figure out that cryptsetup placed the link in dev/mapper/lvm - I was able to mount it once I figured that out. The question is; if I go to unencrypt boot and mount, where does it go? ill read through cryptsetup man when I get home I think!

Interesting advice with arch, I initially wanted to try arch but thought being a noob, I should progress slowly and do 6months with manjaro. I just left my first distro - ubuntu.

LUKS encrypted devices do not get “unencrypted” when you do a luksOpen. They just get a pseudo-device that you can use to read and write to using the encryption key. When you reboot, the devices are “closed” so nobody can read them until someone unlocks (opens) them.

I think there are scripts to configure arch for you. If you want a GUI distro based on Arch that doesn’t deviate too much, you could use one of the community Artix desktop environment images (as a desktop, you won’t notice if you’re running systemd or not). But if Arch is what you’re looking for, you can use some community scripts to set up a DE for you. It’s basically something like wget script | sudo bash, or something like this after you finished partitioning. There might even be some GUI options to help you partition the disk (when I first started with arch, I used cfdisk and slowly moved to fdisk later).

I’m not here to convince you to switch distros though. I really don’t like manjaro for its instability, but if it’s been working for you, no reason to switch from it, unless you really can’t get it to work now.

In all seriousness though, I couldn’t figure out the issue but I managed to get back onto my desktop but I kept getting errors and weird behavior.
Then I started looking around and I saw the community reviews of manjaro. I think you were right, I think the issue was caused by manjaro and their updating scheme and AUR.

Installing Arch as we speak :slight_smile:
