Nextcloud - Offline access and/or documentation for secure online access

Hello everyone,

Here’s the issue I’m facing, and I’ll try to describe it as concisely as possible without leaving out any necessary details.

On an old machine that’s no longer in use, I decided to set up a server on which I installed a Nextcloud instance. The initial goal was to access and centralize necessary information.

I followed several different tutorials, notably on YouTube, and at this point, the local connection and data sharing work without any problem. For example, calendar synchronization between Thunderbird and Nextcloud is working perfectly in both directions.

My current issue is that I’d like at least to be able to access this data without being connected to the local network—for instance, from my Android smartphone. If any changes are made, say on my smartphone, the synchronization would occur once I’m back on the local network.

When I say “at least,” I mean that ideally I wanted to use a subdomain (OVH) linked to my server, accessible through a Cloudflare tunnel. Unfortunately, due to a lack of skill and understanding on my part, I’m unable to “link” my subdomain to the IP address of my server. The goal, of course, is to limit the server’s exposure and allow only targeted access. In this regard, it’s not just about calendar synchronization but also about accessing resources stored on the Nextcloud repository, like commercial solutions offer. It’s entirely possible I’ve missed a specific technical detail that I haven’t fully grasped; if so, please accept my apologies in advance. I’m well aware that the problem is very likely situated between the chair and the input devices, but please go easy on me, as my goal is to learn by using these tools  :slightly_smiling_face:.

Do you have any suggestions for either of these options? What’s your opinion on these two methods if you’ve used them… or even if you haven’t?

Thank you for your help.

Set up wireguard and port-forward in your router (and use some kind of dynamic DNS solution to report your home’s IP address, like nodns or duckdns) and make a split tunnel (i.e. don’t use 0.0.0.0/0, route just your wireguard network in the config).

Alternatively use tailscale (never used this, can’t vouch for it, it’s supposedly easier to set up).
