How many distros can be installed on UTM? I only have Ubuntu on it but I’m thinking of adding another distro to try something different.
I have never used it, so I don’t know about its limitations but if it is anyway like virtualbox or KVM in linux you can can install as many virtual machines as you like:)
As many as you can based on your MacBook specifications. For example, I have a MacBook Pro M2 Pro with 16GB of RAM and 1TB of storage. I currently have 4 VMs and one backup, all but one use 4GB of RAM (Ubuntu 26.04 is at 6GB) and have a hard drive limit of 64GB (default in UTM). My Fedora 44 install is using the most right now at ~30GB. I use it to test things. I think I’ve had at least 3 VMs on at the same time and saw no performance issues. Just keep in mind RAM and storage used for each VM and you should be good.

Good. I bought the M5 MacBook Air. 24 GB ram and 1Tb drive. Should arrive today. (Figured I should buy it now before the prices really go through the roof.) I think I’ll try Debian. Where do I specifically look for when determining what resources to allocate for this or any other distro?
I would keep an eye on your drive space on the Mac and while running multiple VMs you can use the Activity Monitor app on the Mac to view RAM usage.
