Hello, Is there a free anti-virus program that is easy to install that will give good security for Linux Mint? Thank you
No such thing. There’s clamAV, but it’s generally used for mail servers (to scan attachments). It’s not really that powerful, but it can get the job done if you download files and want to check them for known virus signatures.
If you don’t download random stuff from the internet and you keep using software from the mint repos and you don’t do much outside of your browser, you should be fine. Just be cautious what links, file and attachments you open and download.

Or could it be something else? Thank you
you can check files, urls and IPs here in a quest to protect yourself, but Its kind-of a proactive approach which must be learned. I also do fresh installs somewhat regularly, keeping backups current always (ideally:) -a habit I got into first running on older and therefore more death-prone hardware and it worked to keep me cleaned-up from crapola as well.
