I feel like (personally) that the landing page of this community forum is a bit overwhelming. Why, for example, do we not get sent to the ‘Topics’ page, as that gives a chronological view of topics that are recent? As a beginner in Linux I find most of the topics on the Categories page not very approachable and that makes it an uneasy place to be landing on, in my opinion. I am a pretty basic ‘consumer’ Linux user, who does some gaming, audio design, and general media consumption on a Fedora desktop system. But still this Youtube channel has been very helpful in crucial areas of my Linux learning and sometimes light entertainment.
And maybe if I may ask, why are there so many categories? Could it perhaps be more helpful if we have ‘Get advice’, ‘Discussion’, ‘Linux-News’, and ‘Off-Topic’ categories instead? That allows the topic titles themselves to be the final descriptive thing that makes someone decide to click on it, and allows important Linux related events to be posted in this forum. I think learning Linux is not just about understanding things on a technical level, but also about taking part in the discussion around Linux. Basically, learning how to think about Linux, by engaging which opinions, challenging them even, considering there are often important industry changes surrounding Linux and discussing about that can be quite fun.
I fully understand if revamping a functional site philosophy and undermining predefined goals is not desired, so I get it if this is not anything you want to act on.
Though, if all else doesn’t fit, an Off-Topic category I think would really help a lot of people with deciding what category to assign their topic, since currently the ‘Uncategorised’ category is missing the distinction for Linux related or non-Linux related, which will make someone first scan every single category for off-topic which causes a bit of friction.
Forgive me for my ignorance if these suggestions are completely against preferences that are solid within this community. I’ve been watching LearnLinuxTV for a few months now and I’m hoping to jump right into this forum, thinking about trying to ask for advive, learn about changes surrounding Linux or want to participate in general linux related discussion, but instead I’ve just felt a bit off navigating this forum for the reasons outlined above.
Thanks for your time and patience in reading this. Great channel and resource library that I’m sure will help me more and more as the years go by, and congrats on 1 million subscribers.
